In my experience bio pellets are a terrible phosphate control. Bio pellets take in 1 part Po4 for every 16 parts No3 so considering our tanks are constantly producing No3 and we're constantly adding phosphates this rate just isn't high enough. I've heard mixed reviews on the newer bio pellets and lots of them being bad and reporting they don't eat No3 as good as reg BP and still little to no Po4.
All this in mind, every time I tried BP I had Cyano issues. Imo the best form of constant No3 reduction through carbon dosing is Vinager or Vodka dosing or possibly a combo of the 2. With Po4 still having the best option of a fuge, Ats or gfo. I'm personally using a combination of Ats and gfo. The use of a Ats has significantly reduced the amount of Gfo I have to use and also how long the gfo I put in lasts.
