I have a mixed tank that has been up and running for a year and a half. Yesterday afternoon I noticed that my birdsnest and birds of paradise were just white skeletons. I checked everything out and all water parameters tested good, but that my temp had gone up to ? Probably 88, the fan I had blowing under the light hood had died. Everything has been fine up until now, except that about a week ago I noticed the green lobo wasn't looking great so I had moved him to another location in the tank. This morning more stuff looks in trouble.
red acan is receding and I can see white spots between heads, hammer has closed up tight and looking whitish, all my zoas are closed up, rainbow ricordea is closed up and spewing crap, rainbow montipora is "fuzzy but still has polyps, and my RTBA has shortened up. Fish all seem fine, snails are fine, and emerald crab is still tromping around. The only corals seeming unaffected are the purple yellow tip acropora, and my green paly.

i did do a water change last night as well, and get the temperatures back down to 80, slowly. I removed hood added new fan and turned up ac in the room.

Not sure what to do, as I don't wit to overreact and cause more harm, but should I move corals to hospital tank. I haven't made any major changes in a long time. I did clean out my overflow box and put in a new check valve about four days ago along with water change, but that's it. Very confused, first time I have lost anything in the tank so it's frustrating.just hoping the whole thing doesn't crash. My protein skimmer hasn't been producing very much lately, so I could pull that and clean it out.

You need to do some big water changes and run carbon.

The big killer (temp spike) has already occurred. Now corals that will die are already set in motion. All you can do is water changes and carbon to get the toxins and excess dissolved die off out. Keep checking ammonia with a good test kit. That should be 0. What might happen is a mini cycle and water changes will help lower the harshness.

For any corals starting to go necrotic you may benefit from a coral dip like coral revive. Best of luck.

It it were my tank, I'd do an initial 20% water change and then just use good quality carbon and a poly filter to soak any residual toxins or ammonia. Keep testing nitrates and ammonia as well though, if you start to see more die off more water changes may be needed.

Ditto, corals effected by temp can take awhile to react. The biggest thing like already stated is the toxins corals are releasing from stress or death.
I will say that imo most things that are still alive now have a good chance of making it if you follow the advice given above.
When you get things back in check I'll help you out with replacing some of the Sps you lost from me. Hope things start doing better.

The white skeletons are actually showing some color on the polyps again, so I'm hopeful.

As much as it sucks putting up the money for a controller, times like this are when they can pay for themselves. I am reefless at the moment, but when I had my last tank up and running the peace of mind I had with the Apex was well worth the money.. plus it's nice when you leave town to be able to check in on your parameters. Think of it like an insurance plan.. you may never need it, but when you start to realize you have thousands invested in livestock, it's not a bad trade off!

Last week with the hot temps I noticed my tank climbing up to 83.5 I invested in an air conditioner and have it set for 74. My tank is now at 78.0 and doesn't budge
