So Ive heard so much about egg crate growing algae especially white egg crate. I ignored it in my previous build and only had a bloom during the cycle after that the algae cleared and the crate was encrusted with coraline. It was awesome. I made some frag racks for another tank no issues. Then I built my dual 40b set up. My egg crate has been fighting a constant battle with algae, its almost like having a scrubber to put frags in because the algae doesn't grow ANYWHERE else! This has frustrated me. The egg crate I'm using is from home depot and made by lithoania lighting. I don't recall where the egg crate from my previous build came from but I'm done thinking all eggcrate is equal. So I went to Lowes today and purchased some more. Its made by a different company in the US in Ohio. I'm going to make another frag rack with this brand and trade out the old crate. I plan to report my findings to help everyone else if the home depot stuff is the problem.

Looking at the label to see what it's made out of would be useful as well.

Odd. I have never had problems like that. I am sure you have, but check your water parameters to rule anything out.

The stuff I've been using is from lowes with no excessive algae growth

That's reassuring to my theory Frank, thanks for sharing. I'm swapping mine out today.

where does the algae start on the rack? bottom,top,sides....
I have always bought from home depot the only time I had an issue was with lack of flow under the frag rack...
have you put any thought into the egg crate being tapered?

So far the new crate has not reached previous levels of algae but is turning off white.

So the algae is back....but its most abundant on frag plugs and fades out from there. Its only effecting the lower rack so I'm assuming its a flow issue at this point. I'm running a jeboa wp25 but have it aimed at my top (sps) shelf as I have softies/LPs on my lower shelf it would just have too much flow for.

So its not the egg crate. I believe its more of a flow issue. There is no difference in the two brands The lower frag rack gets algae the higher one doesn't

I did switch the racks out and it comes back. It appears to be coming from some of the frag pugs. I've added an extensive cuc but no one wants to eat it.
