I'm looking for some feedback. I can have a running system before a running system. I have the option of running both fuge's about 6 months before the display tank goes live, is this worth doing to build up some nitrifying bacteria, get a pod population going, and some macro algea. I could put the frag tank online 3 months prior to. Would setting it up one piece at a time serve me any advantage or would I lose most of what I grow in the cycle? It would be a 40b sump/fuge, and a 20h sump running together, then a 40b frag tank (bare bottom egg crate shelving), then the 40b display (using exclusively dry rock so I can take time creating my scape). Another option is to run just the frag tank and 20h, then when the display is up I can run the 2 40's independently till they cycle and combine the systems. The frag/qt tank would be nice to have separately as I'm filling the display, I also already have some of my corals in the Nano that I could move and grow out a bit more as the nano is going to become exclusively softies. Thoughts on this strategy? What am I overlooking? I have a diagram but havn't had time to scan it yet.

Going big, staying small. Finished picking up my tanks at the $1 per gallon sale, this is the current state of things, going to get my next skimmer, return pumps and plumbing next.

This happens to us all but you may be over thinking this one. Will you have a more established bio filter and population of pods before putting the display online? yes. But once you add your frag tank and display to the system there will be a slight adjustment to the new set of params seeing as how you will be about doubling your water volume. I would set up the 3 40 breeders as well as the 20 all in one shot. And then perhaps add the dry rock in a few weeks or months or whenever you like. The point im trying to make, is that in 6 months time you will have pods and nitrifying bacteria wherever there is surface area for them. by putting all of the tanks on line at once, you will have greater pod numbers in 6 months than if you built the system in segments.

I've been cleaning out the "fish room" getting a lot of junk sold and out of the way. I just finished up some boxing to get my sumps off of the floor, and I'm putting a wood floor in the bottom of the metal stands to hold some plastic cabinets and my 5 gallon top offs. Over the weekend I'll be cutting some pink styrofoam to put under the tanks. My next project will be some glass-hole over flows and installing my return bulk heads, then plumbing. I need an electrician to check out the electrical for this room as my previous tank killed it...then it came back and never tripped a breaker, after all that I might get the frag section up and going as it'll be online 6-8 months prior to the display.
