would like to see pics of the fish. back in my freshwater days I had 7 black emerald smaragdina in a 40g planted. it was one of my favorite tanks... I actually don't have any in that tank even at this point. I'm trying to get the plants to fill in so that the tank will sustain a scud and etc... population to help keep them happy. I need to upgrade the light and hopefully things will start to fill in. I have a single male, but he's hiding in my 40B community tank just waiting for this tank to be ready. They have tons of personality and aren't really timid about people. Not as smart as Cichlids maybe but you definitely get the sense that they are curious about you.

Nice tanks! Where do you get most of your plants and supplies from? Looks like you have the tanks on a rack system. Any pics of your setup?

Do you have your Algae Scubber on top of the tank and going directly into the tank? It looks like that "Fuge" light could be a big reason your getting all the different cycles of algae? not an real algae scrubber. Just an Aquaclear 110 as a HOB fuge with Cheato and some rubble in it. Also running a carbon cartridge and a bag of Purigen. Light spill from it might be an issue, but that's why I don't run it opposite of the display. The light itself is not really powerful enough(compared to the BML) to do much harm anyways, just an PC bulb.

You could use a Rubbermaid container for now and change it out later. Give you way more room/water volume as well. Sent from my SM-N910R4 using proboards

This was always planned as a no sump build. If I was going to be stocking heavily I would've probably gone that way. I wanted this one simple and compact(relatively speaking). The 93 gallon I'm dreaming about will definitely have a sump.
The algae issues don't have me worried, just part of the chemistry within the tank getting sorted out(that and a lack of water changes) I just finally got a pump to mix/pump the new water, so I can now start doing them. The Hair algae is already starting to fade a bit. Almost completely gone off of the rockwork and isn't spreading anymore on the glass.
I think I'm going to track down and remove the hitchhiker hermits before I get any corals. Just for piece of mind since I have no idea how reef safe they are.

What do you think of a hang on back refugium? The filter definitely works I just think you'd do better with more room for your Cheato and maybe some unsafe hermits as well Sent from my SM-N910R4 using proboards

I had considered one of those CPR hob fuges but they come with quite a price tag, but that may be a worthwhile upgrade in the future.

Picked up a TDS meter to see what my tap water is like(artesian well with just a particulate filter on it) as I don't have a RO/DI unit.
First test came back as 93.
