I've read of people getting rejected. I used to bring aquatic life back from Florida before TSA, no problems.

I would just spend the $40 to ship it....

Drain as much water as you can then put it in a small box and pack it. Also to let them know it's in your luggage at the time of check in. It all depends on who your flying with also.
