So I'm curious how much you all pay for electricity and the size of your tank. Since Mid October my 120 has been cycling our electric bill was $178 about a $30 increase for the month of November it was over $270!!! We went from 900kw to 1500kw. The system uses a 300w heater, 4 kessils (smaller ones about 35w each, a quiet one and a sedra pump, and an auto top off. Our heater also ran a lot. With the cost of electricity going up I'm terrified that this is the norm. I'm going to get a killawatt and do an energy audit on my tank, but until then any reassurance or reality checks?

did they change out the power meter on your house yet? the old meters didnt give true power readings so people were getting free power or paying to much. the newer digital meters give them exact readings... with the new meter my power went down, but my parents went up...
I run more power than most with 5 tanks, snake, electric stove,2 freezers, grow room..... my bill is $240 a month.
my question for you is do you have electric heat? or a neighbor that is stealing power for an electric heater?

Whose the supplier? We normally run around 1200kw and our electric bill is around 145$. We had a high rate a few months back because my wipe switched our supplier and for the same kw per month we were paying 220$ per month. You really have to check your rate because a lot of the suppliers Give you a great rate for the first 6 months and then jack it up. I found the standard offer from Cmp was the best rate at least for consistency. Our bill used to run around 125$+ before the tank and 145$ now. I run a 300 watt heater, wp40, koralia 1500, hydor L40 return, 2 reactors, dosing pumps and 2 Radions

I have the old style meter. We have Emera and the rate is $0.07. We burn oil for heat. I had the system up for 3 weeks in October. Our September bill was $120, our Oct was $170 so I figured it would hover between $170-$200. The usage is up dramatically. Its in the basement but the room is finished and heated so I didn't think it would cost a fortune to heat the tank. One of my friends suggested the heating unit in my electric hot water heater could be stuck.

Yeah that just seems like way to much of an increase to be solely from the tank.

In an effort to keep my aquarium heaters off I closed the door to the room in the basement (its typically warm in there) and added a dehumidifier. The heat vent to this room is approx 5 ft from the heater. When I checked on it this morning the tank was at 79 I have it set to run at 77. So the room gets hot enough to heat it the problem now is determining how hot the room itself can get so It doesn't over heat and figuring out how to somewhat control the temp. In addition to sourcing what is using so much electricity.

Might want to look at other uses of electricity in your home too. Our use varies from month to month. My fish room is in our basement, which is finished and located next to the furnace room, and is the warmest room in the house during winter if I close the door.

Its effectively a $138 jump from sept and a $108 jump from October did anyone else's go up that much Have you compared the 3 bills to see if the rate went up? A lot of suppliers start charging a lot higher rate when you go over 1000kw so I think that's most of your problem. I use between 1200kw and 1400kw and that's the reason we switched suppliers because once we went over 1000kw they were charging close to double the rate. So if you were using 900kw and you're now using 1500kw that extra 600kw could be costing you the same as the first 900kw. Sent from my SM-N910R4 using proboards

Some supplyers offer a rate drop after how ever many kWh the first so many are a bit higher then most but once you get over a point it drops
Example... 0kw to 1000kw at .072 and 1000kw and up at .063
