Are those the northern pipefish found along the coast? I catch a few during the summer.

Cool. How big are they and how long have you had them? I caught two a few years ago that were huge- 10-12". I've got some pictures on my work computer that I will try to post here.

They are about 8 to 10 inches. They grow fast. Especially if they get a chance to eat half a litter of seahorse fry. oops.

Dug up one of my pictures of the large pipefish we caught a few years ago. This one was 10". We usually catch them around 4-5".

Did you ever try keeping them?

No. I'm not set up to provide food for them. What do yours eat (other than sea horse fry)?

Mine scoff up frozen mysis like vacuum cleaners. Took about a week to get them from nhbs to frozen. I just let them go a day w/o live food and then offered the frozen. They picked up on it real quick. Seems once one got it, the others followed suit.

They adapt real well to tank life. They seem to like hanging in the same spot most of the time, ready to spring at food. You can hear a loud snap when they snick, like the seahorses. Definitely a covered tank fish. When they go after food it is often fast, but when startled they can fly half way across the room. Think of an arrow. Hoping they breed.

Glad to hear they adapt well. Do you have a heater in the tank?
