on friday night i was tinkering with the tank, and afterwards i noticed one of my fingers was sore. figured no big deal, went to sleep assuming it would be better in the am. woke up several times throughout the night in discomfort, finger throbbing. the next day it seemed to get worse... swollen, hard as a rock, and really sensitive (stacking a cord of wood was not fun, nor was even typing on my computer's keyboard). like a stubborn dude, i ignored it again, tried to go to bed but couldn't sleep because of the throbbing pain. no ibuprofen or tylenol in the house, drove 15 miles to Walmart to get drugs at 6am on a sunday morning. they helped, along with neosporin, and i was able to get a couple hours of sleep late morning/early afternoon today.
it's a little better today, or at least the drugs are making it more bearable, but we'll see how it plays out. doctor's visit will be in order if it doesn't get better - i considered going to the ER last night, but figured they would probably look at me funny since saltwater injuries are probably not very common in central maine.
no clue what got me - possibly a bristleworm although most of the accounts i've read about with bristleworms make it seem like a bee sting... i have a high tolerance for pain and this was A LOT worse than a bee sting... possibly a fireworm? i've never seen either in my tank but i guess they could be there. i also fragged some paly's on friday so it could be palytoxin entering a small cut on my finger or something? possibly my hammer coral too... tough to figure it out for sure, all i know is i don't want to go through it again.
i've spent entire weekends moving around and rearranging live rock, coral, fragging, etc, and have never had anything more than slight irritation, usually from sharp vermetid snails. i will now be wearing gloves anytime i am messing around with rock or corals.
