I think my next fish is going to be a male Blue Throat Trigger, as small as I can find......hopefully around 3".
Anyone have any experience with them in a reef?
They are considered one of the reef safe triggers, and actually are quite fond of nori. I have read a ton of threads about them on RC, and it seems to be about 90% good and 10% bad.
Went to a few southern stores today, saw a few but they were too big..........and we were on the bike so really didn't want to do a 90 minute ride with the poor guy in the tourpak.

they are coral safe I wouldnt say reef safe... they wont munch your coral but forget about having any shrimp, clams, hermits or snails.... and dont forget you have to feet them things with shells so they can grind their teeth down, or you will be playing dentist.
last time I was at oceansinglass they had a small pair for like $119

Seems like i was reading somewhere that there is a bone that's usually hung in birdcages that can be placed inside our tanks. the trigger will wear it's teeth down on it. Might be worth a shot.

Feed it an occasional live mussel or clam. Wear those teeth down and get a tasty treat. Did anyone mention, no giant clams with triggers?

I used to feed my FO tank a clam on a half shell...........the 3 triggers would destroy it in no time, and make a huge mess.
I was reading one article on Blue Throats that they like to eat Nori and seaweed, that would be cool. If I can find a 3" male, I'll give it a shot.........only thing I'm worried about is my cleaner shrimp, but I've read they leave them alone(most of the time).

personally the only trigger I have seen leave shrimp alone was a pink tail trigger, but he loved hermit crab. I would pick them up at the ocean and keep them in the sump for random snack time

My Niger trigger never ate snails, crabs and loved my cleaner shrimp. I have pictures with the cleaner riding on the triggers face. But it loved to take chunks out of fish especially new fish. Imo every trigger is different and will act differently but more times then not there gonna eat something in your tank you don't want them to. They're a predatory fish and even the blue throat and pink tail are at the least moderately aggressive. But if you love the type of fish then it may be worth the risk to you. Maybe you'll get lucky. Clown trigger is my all time favorite fish, but is definitely not reef safe. But again, I've read about people getting them small and putting them in reefs and they do fine with no problems at all. Oceans in Glass had a small one yesterday, about 1" or so............$75. Unique and Jays usually has them for $35-$40 that size.
Male blue throat is a cool looking fish, and comes with a good reef reputation for the most part. All the ones I've seen lately have been bigger then I want. Easy has a pair right now, but they are about 5". Unique had 3 yesterday for $150, Oceans had a pair for $100, and Jays had one for $50.

Seems like order of introduction is one of the biggest things. An established Cleaner is probably going to be fine unless the trigger gets hungry.

And my cleaner is a beast........and loves cleaning my fingers when I'm in the tank working.

25% off at Petco today............it was a done deal. $39 out the door for a male Blue Throat Trigger, about 3" or so. Just ate like a champ, don't think any food made it in the filter intake. Can't wait to get him in the display and see his colors under good lighting...........but he has some time to serve in the QT tank.
