One of the razors major design flaws is for people who want to use them inside a canopy, you can't see the control panel to make changes. You either have to take the light out of the canopy or specifically build a canopy with a side access door to get to the controls. Another issue is they are not easily upgradable like some higher end led lights unless your willing to DIY and possibly void warranty. So basically unless maxspect comes out with upgradable led pucks and other features for the razors as technology changes, your pretty much stuck with a mediocre led light. Aside from that, they are just kinda goofy looking fixtures overall.

I think razors are a cheap light with a few bells and whistles. Just me. Have you considered the Ai hydra? I don't remember the size of your tank right now sorry but there a pretty good price. www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3733+10704+28916&pcatid=28916Remember with a good led less watts doesn't always mean less light. Kessil is a good light as well. In all reality you want pwm because they're more efficient and run cooler so the fixture performs better and last longer. coralux.net/?p=381My display is small, only a 29g. A friend of mine had his display tank break and is taking a break from reefing for awhile, so he is going to let me use one of his razor r420r 160w for awhile. Hopefully it will help me makes decision. Those hydra look interesting at first glance. I'll give it a close look later. At first I thought kessil was going to be way mire expensive than I wanted to spend, but I'm pretty much in that range now.....so who knows.

go with the it2040, its a good inexpensive light with programming capabilities. if you dont care about programming go with a value fixture set the percentage's for white and blue channel and plug it into a timer

You could get a kessil A360w E series really cheap right now.... I know someone (Me) that's selling 2 of them brand new in the sealed box.

I have the Maxspect Razor and there are pros and cons. Much like everything you can buy for this hobby. Some corals have not done as well under the Razor as they were under my T5's. Others have done as well or better. Three things I love about them over my T5's are the fact they don't heat my tank in the summer time, no bulb replacement, and there was a reduction in my electric bill.
As for the coverage, most of the units I have seen on other tanks have been using the supplied legs and they simply are not high enough. Aqua Corals swears by the Razor, but they recommend a height above the tank of 16" for the proper light spread. I bent a piece of conduit and hung mine about that distance above the top of the water, or about 14" above the tank.
True there are not a ton of adjustments, but for my purposes they work fine. I don't mind the size of the unit as I prefer the passive cooling as units that rely on fans means if they fail the unit can be compromised. They are reasonably priced and nowhere near the more expensive units. I got rid of my canopy which I was really happy to do, my tank has a much cleaner look to it now, and I put together a couple of screen tops that work great.
