I want to set up my tank and buy things as I need them, in order to spread the cost over time. Do I need to have my lighting ready before I start t o cycle my tank? I know my livestock needs proper light, but do the bacteria need them as well?

Best bet it to start with getting the tank, stand, pumps, plumbing and sump set up. Get the water and reef salt like Instant Ocean salt mixed in. I like adding my sand and rock once the tank in up and running with water. You definitely don't need to have the 1 pound per gallon of rock and a deep sand bed to be successful. Its just going to cost you a Ton more money that could be spent more wisely on better equipment that will have the same effect. Your not going to need to worry about lighting until you want to start adding photosynthetic livestock like corals, anemones and such.

I cycled my tank without a light at first and it turned out just fine, it gives you an extra month or so to save up for a nice light.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like I will have a little time to save up and do some DIY LEDS.
