So I went to Petco the other day to get a 40 breeder on sale for $1 per gallon. I checked out and thought I'll check the receipt later. here is how the receipt reads. The description reads 40B aquarium for $119.99. Then under that is my $5 Petco pals reward coupon, so the taxable total is now at $114.99 (119.99 minus 5.00). Next is sales tax on the 114.99 for $6.32. The sub total is now at $121.31. Next they subtracted the Pals manufacturer coupon for $79.99 (this is the Pals coupon to make $1/gal) for a final total of $41.32.
so my questions are why was I charged sales tax on $114.99, and why did my $5 Pals reward get deducted from $119.99??? Shouldn't I have been charged sales tax on $40 as this is the price of the tank and shouldn't have my reward dollars come off the $40?

Either Petco is mis taxing people or the price reduction is a rebate or coupon passed on from the manufacturer and passed on directly to you from them. This would constitute the tax bring placed on the full amount of the item before any discount. The rewards, this is taken from the Petco website " •5 Pals Reward Dollars will be applied to all purchases prior to any other coupons at point of sale."
So here it is, 119.99 full price -5.00 Rewards 114.99 taxable total 6.32 tax on the 114.99 121.31 Sub total 79.99 Manufacturers rebate 41.32 total That is how it is written in the state tax statue for the instant rebate or manufacturers coupon and the terms of the Petco rewards program.

Thanks. That makes a little more sense. I think I will ask them about the $79.99 coupon part. That's deceiving when you see the price sticker marked at $40.

Maybe it's just that pet co? I bought a 20L during the 1$ per gallon sale and had a 5$ pals reward I ended up paying 15$ something? I don't have the receipt but I know that's what I paid so that's kinda weird.. Then again maybe they messed up on mine and not yours who knows with pet co.

I will admit Petco has been flaky lately. I bought an item in NH and wanted to return it in Maine and the couldn't because they couldn't change the tax rate and suggested I go back to the petco I bought it from.
They really should specify what the discount is because it effects how the tax is done. The rewards should be the same thing but it does state in the agreement " 5 Pals Reward Dollars will be applied to all purchases prior to any other coupons at point of sale." but I agree it should be done one way or the other.

next time wait till after they ring it up and then produce your 5$ reward and see if that make a difference. most the people at the counter are young and have the least experience and dont even know that placing a discount in a different sequence effects the total price. Ive had good luck at the bangor store allways tries to ring me up with the most savings

oh and allways ask them them if there is any other kind of discount you can get. say like i want to buy this this and this can you give me a deal if i buy all 3. I was told they can give you upwards of 15% and have received that discount many times at different stores. they seem to give discounts more often on fish purchases. cant say ever bought a fish from them at full price. Ive also told them that I have seen items on the website at lower prices. they say well we cant match online prices. I then say well cant u give me some kind discount cuz i came all way down here with that price in mind. they generally do give a discount
