I will be starting my 125 in mid to late July and would like your opinions on how you would transfer stock. I don't plan on keeping my 29g longer than needed for the transfer to be completed. Here are a few things that need to be considered:
- I am using 100% dead rock that I sanitized using bleach and muriatic acid then stored in ro for three months dosing lanthanum chloride. It's completely dry in my basement. I'm going to build a reef with acrylic rods and epoxy. I'm planning on putting a couple small pieces of my 29g to help seed the tank.
- I'm using sand but I'm undecided on what to use
Im thinking that I'll put a couple small pieces of LR in my sump along with a well-seasoned filter sock from my 29g along with a clown fish. I'll monitor the parameters and remove the fish if ammonia spikes. There should be plenty of bacteria present from the LR and the seasoned filter sock to handle the waste of one clown.
Another other option includes using the same LR and filter sock but dosing ammonia to cycle. The benefit of using ammonia is that I can culture enough bacteria to introduce a full tank of inhabitants without any issue, especially if I bring the ammonia up to 3-4ppm. The problem is this takes much more time and the nitrates will skyrocket as a result and be a real pain to mitigate. I've used this technique with my 75 African tank years ago. I dumped 20 Demasoni in at once and ammonia/nitrite were never detectable.
what would you do??

I know this is out of the realm of your questions but.... Does your tank have ick? I know mine does and although I've lost no fish due to ick, when I upgrade my tank at my new house I'll be trying to get my newer tank to be ick free. All current fish will be treated and all new fish will be quarantined. Do you plan to use any bacteria boosters? I've heard that Dr Tim's one and only is great for this and if you add it you can add 1-2 fish the same day and only have to wait a few days to slowly start adding more.

I'm not planning on using any boosters, too many mixed reviews.
