So I am planning out my next sump. I think I am going to do a 55 gallon tank I have lying around... Really dont need one this big but it is free so what the hell... Anyways I called Portland Glass for a quote, and they said $175... Sorry but that seems like way too much.... What are y'all's thoughts? ?

$175 for what? baffles?
I paid like $30 for the baffles in my sump, then I went back and got a piece of plexiglass cut for the top for another $30.

A lot of times local hardware stores only carry 1/8" glass, which is way too thin for baffles.
1/4" glass is the way to go, and I've done my last 2 sumps with Portland Glass........but not at those prices.

Pretty sure that Lowes carries 1/4 glass and they cut it for free. Personally I think 1/8 glass is fine for baffles...there isn't any pressure on them. A glass cutting tool is about $6 and extremely easy to use...FYI

Rob/gottareef hooked me up with some nice thick baffles cut exactly as needed for a 40b and was much more affordable than lowea or any other glass company I tried. I would contact him as he does great work.

A glass cutting tool is about $6 and extremely easy to use...FYI No pressure until you have an ato malfunction and the return chamber almost empties, or if you accidentally knock it with a piece of live rock, skimmer or whatever. Using 1/8" glass imo is not worth the cost savings when compared to the higher possibility of a baffle breaking and having to be replaced, that would suck. We should strive for the highest and most easily attainable safety factor.

I agree with all the time and money (no matter if its a lot or a little) its not worth it to build something that is not strong... I am going to use 1/4" glass for my baffles... thats what i used in my last sump and it worked very well!
