I wouldn't call ASM a top of the line but a good, cheap skimmer. I don't think I have ever seen ASM skimmers even rated when top of the line skimmers have been rated. ASM's design is a knock off of the old euro reef skimmers and has had its share problems from inferior plastics being used in manufacturing which leads to the tabs that hold the skimmer neck to the body to break as well as the same for the collection cup to the skimmer neck. The skimmer bodies also have a tendency of clouding and/or crazing with hairline cracks, they also used O-rings that were leaching chemicals into tank water. Euro reef had an elbow on the water inlet that directed water downward to the bottom of the skimmer casing more dwell time cutting corners ASM did not have this feature causing the water in the ASM to be more like a vortex. Euro reef used a nice rubber grommet to seal the water inlet pipe to the skimmer body as where ASM used a cheap uniseal that was a PITA. But just like anything else the euro reef cs-5 back in the day was $225 to 250 as the comparable ASM G-1 was $125 to 150 and the ASM worked. Today the ASM is 249 and the euroreef, oops reef dynamics is 349 lol how long have you used your euroreef or asm skimmers? I hated the resun pump on the euroreef also with the euro reef the top half just slid together no locking tabs. not sure how asm is a knock off if it is a better product. dont know what you are talking about with the asm clouding or hazing because my old euroreef did that not the asm. with the ero reef the elbow pointing down putting the bubbles into the bubble chamber was part of there demise, it caused the skimmer to put tons of micro bubbles in the tank, ams fixed this by letting the bubbles rise naturally most of what you are saying I have seen the opposite.... maybe you are mixed up?

I'm yeah, We were the first retailers of ASM and Euro Reef in New England and warrantied many ASM skimmers. Euroreef was by far a superior built product. "with the ero reef the elbow pointing down putting the bubbles into the bubble chamber was part of there demise, it caused the skimmer to put tons of micro bubbles in the tank, ams fixed this by letting the bubbles rise naturally"
The original Euroreefs up until 2008 used rebranded Sedra Pumps.
EuroReef and ASM both had issues with micro bubbles hence why both of them use the gray sponge on the output tube. Now what makes a top of the line skimmer is the contact time between the bubbles and water also known as dwell time. Euroreef patented the elbow pointing the bottom of the skimmer supposingly increasing the dwell time between the air and water, to this day Euroreef still owns the patent. ASM never did this because of the patent so they did not fix this. I mis spoke, the elbow is on the water output side of the skimmer where ASM has a lip on the bottom on the frame of the body. Both use the same water delivery shooting the Air water mixture into the body. Being completely honest besides the build quality both performed very well for that time period, the exit methods of the water from the body are irrelevant and the increase of dwell time of the Euroreef is at best marginal.
My ASM was used brand new out of box for roughly six years and was given away to someone on BRS due to the Tabs being broken and the body looking like gray milk due to hazing. The Euroreef was used from 2000 to 2009 and is sitting on a shelf downstairs next the three bad sedra pumps.
The Euroreef also used a screw type fitting to hold the collection cup to the skimmer body, so I am wondering if you may be confused. The Resun pumps were only used on the Euroreef for a year or two before Euroreef went away.
So now can you now tell me the actual demise of Euroreef? It was NOT micro bubbles.

I find on my Bubble magus I have to take it apart every three or so months to clean the slime off the magnet to keep it running. After that it runs like a champ. I am guessing that the upgraded pump us the Atman sp2000 but I do not know as it was un badged when I got it.

i got the tank used the skimmer came with it. I knew should have taken it apart. Now I'm thinking part of reason the guy got done with this tank is the skimmer never was working right. there is a check valve on the air intake to the pump. when I tried remove it was on there so tight it broke the nipple off the valve. the airline must have been like that for a while. When checked the valve I noticed that it had been on backwards so was not even getting air lol. So guy have been running it like that for quite a while. that should have told me right then take the whole thing apart. but I didnt and it slowly started working worse. so took it all apart noticed the pinwheels were not in there quite right (not on the key)and cap holds armature in was loose and hose connection coming off pump going to skimmer was loose. well cleaned everything put back right seems working good now

I've read they do allot better with mesh on the needle wheel impeller? I don't know this to be factual because I never tried it when I had mine but I know mine was kinda a Pita. Figured I'd pass on the info. They sell mesh specifically for impellers.

I actually love that skimmer. I gave my father mine and bought a used ASM and hate it. Wish I kept the Coralife. Not sure why people don't like them, the adjustment is super touchy but once dialed in they are great.

The reason people don't like them is because they are super touchy and a few people have had them empty their sump on their floor. If I am not mistaken one member here had this happen to them.
