Looks kinda like a sponge, except it's gray and looks to be decaying.

I have pure black sponges in my tank so no I don't think so.

Sponges die if taken out of water. Keep an eye on it if it has been out of the water.

its called a chocken liver sponge they are black

I have one just like that, there are so many different types and colors. Mostly found in non lit places with little flow. Also there will be a lot inside live rock where we can't see them. They also help polish the water.
