I thought the article was great.
sorry have to totally disagree.
"it may point us in a new direction for feeding marine predators." what a joke
lol feeding sw animals other sw animals is a new thing for predator fish?
No but it would make it easier for people who didn't live along the coast. We also know that Saltwater fish have higher nutrient needs.I can see a big time breeder using clowns for fish food, because they should cull the deformed inbred fish like "stubby clowns"
it isnt worth it to breed clowns strictly for fish food, way to expensive, time consuming.... there are much easier fish you can breed for sw live food.
Most Reputable breeders are already doing this. Plus Breeders right now are either throwing culls and deformed offspring into the trash or using them for fertilizer. My opinion is if you can use these fish to feed other fish instead of wasting them why not? The process of raising them is all ready done so it isn't a debate about that.
Saltwater fish have different nutrient need than fresh water fish do so feeding a saltwater fish a saltwater fish would be closer to their normal diet.
when I had my predator tank, my True black volitan would only eat live food. collecting feeder fish was a pain and with feeding gold fish they are dirty, they die fast in the sw not to mention the cost of either of these things
I was breeding about 15 species of cichlids at the time and found with red jewel cichlids it only took a couple weeks to acclimate them to full sw and they did very well, brighter colors, fast growth.....
300 eggs a week within about 2 months I had 1"+ sw jewels, they were great because they didnt die off in the tank and they didnt cost much. I could put a bunch in the tank for the lion and grouper to snack on whenever they wanted.
300eggs a week hatching within another week and can feed flakes from day one... no need for cultures to feed cultures enriching brine or other pita things you need to raise clownfish and the cichlids grow 2x-3x faster.
I don't understand what this comment is about seeing that the SW feed will already be raised and you would go into the pet store and purchase them like you do gold fish and comets. No different from buying comets, saltwater feed you will need a set up a tank to house them or dump them right in the tank.
Again Saltwater fish have different nutritional needs from a fresh or brackish fish. A saltwater feeder would closer match what a saltwater fish would eat in the wild.
