I have a large turbo snail that hasn't moved in a week. I took him out of the tank and there was no bad smell. It was retracted very deep in the shell and there was a very rock like feel to him when I reached in and flicked it with my fingernail. I put it in the sump to keep a close eye on it.... Anyone have an idea

I've had large snails retract like this as well. It's best just to leave it alone in a quiet space like your sump. Many times they do this if they are injured.

He may be injured. When I turned him over there was a bumblebee snail in his shell at the top. I thought it was odd and assumed it was dead. The snail failed the smell test, I heard they have a horrible odor when they are dead, no smell at all.

It was probable being attacked by the bumble bee snail. They are predators. That's my best guess why it's pulled way into its shell.

I have a theory... I think that sometimes snails eat algae (or something) that contain some sort of toxin that knocks them out temporarily. A number of times I've seen turbos just stop on the glass, then fall off, lay in the the sand bed or rocks for a while (up to a few days), then seemingly wake up and move on.

I read that cyano is really toxic to snails? Awhile back when I had cyano my snails seemed to sit in one spot on my glass forever..... Until I would clean the glass around them, then they'd take off. I've also seen snails and hermits seem to be dead in one spot for days and then they just start moving around the tank again. Plus turbo snails are only $1.50 easily replaced and you'll probably have to replace them often anyways. I've had my turbo snails since set up but I've heard others say they don't last long. Hermits will kill snails as well if they need a bigger shell.

I didn't realize bumblebee's were predators! I didn't research enough.
I'm not sure if there is a toxin Lance, I always thought that they gorged themselves and then took a break to digest. I have frequently observed the dormant turbo snail sometimes for up to four of five days.

Noticed some algae on the substrate this afternoon... Odd because its been a while since I've seen that. My p04 has been .02 and no detectable Nitrates...
I picked up the turbo snail in the sump and it most definitely failed the smell test. p04 was at .05, not sure about Nitrates, but I think I just caught it in time. I changed out my gfo and carbon and will test tomorrow.
Everything looks good in the tank so I think I caught it in time before p04 or nitrate could spike and cause problems.

+1 on the who needs test kits, Yesterday I knew there was a problem looking at the tank fifteen feet away. It was when I got close up I figured out the problem.
