I've recently seen a bit of an aptasia outbreak in the 220 gallon tank that I maintain. I'm considering adding a copper band butterfly to hopefully clean up the issue. What's the general consensus on them. Is it worth trying? Has anyone had one that didn't eat aptasia or had one that ate leather corals? I've heard it's difficult to get them eating prepared foods. Has anyone had any issues with getting them to eat. Any information or experience is appreciated.

Not sure if it's relevant, but I had a Long Nose Butterfly from LiveAquaria... for months it seemed to do great, constantly picking at the rock. One day it seemed to be breathing irregularly, the next day it was laying on the sandbed covered in snails. I'm guessing I didn't have a big enough tank/live rock to keep it alive long term.
Will probably be a long time before I try another butterfly, if ever, but I think they're really cool looking fish, especially the Copperbands and Long Nose. Mine never seemed interested in prepared food, and I don't recall it ever eating from the water column - just picking at the rock. Pretty funny to see the narrow/deep crevices it could fit it's nose into in search of food. Mine seemed to harass snails every once in a while, but left my corals alone.

They are famous for being fine one day and dead the next.

I had one for a few months it devoured over 100 aptasia in my 30xh. It didn't appear to eat large food but would swim back and forth through a cloud of rotifers when added to the tank I presume it was eating on each pass after the aptasia was gone I rehomed it to a reefer with a 6ft 125 tank. I lost contact with him and don't know how the fish made out I kept it for roughly two months due to my tank size it was never meant to be a permanent pet.

I've had good luck with mine. Eats mysis, or aptsia. Nothing else. Was skittish at first, but is a happy member of the community now.

Back in the good old days... When I was in wholesale, we avoided Philippine Angels and Butterflys like the plague. At that time - don't know if this has changed - almost all fish out of the Philippines were cyanide caught. They were cheap, came in looking great, would often eat like pigs, then they would either die suddenly or die slowly (wasting away) in spite of eating well. On the other hand, Angels and Butterflys from Bali and Hawaii were awesome...and net caught. Bali fish cost us 2-3x what the same fish out of the Philippines cost. But as I always told my customers, a live healthy fish is worth what I'm asking. A dead fish is worth nothing.

It's not just the fish either they send kids down with those cyanide squirt bottles to catch the fish! Very dangerous for the kids and fish. It's definitely a cause for pause.
