Yesterday I was taking a road trip to puck up a pump I wanted for the new set up and to visit a few aquarium stores in NH and Ma. I was psyched I found a four month old pump on the cheap. So off on the four hour round trip drive I go and hit the pick up location. The pump was looked awesome but then the pump was sitting on the base something looked wrong. I noticed the pump outlet was off maybe ten or fifteen degrees, and his posed a slight problem as my system is hard plumbed and the outlet needs to be straight up and down. As I start talking to the seller ( he is a great guy ) he let me know that he has two pumps for sale one being a 30 RXT and a 40 RXT both pumps have the same pump head just a different motor and the pump head is cast a little different because the screw mounting holes are off a bit. The seller was running the 30 and a pebble got stuck in the impeller so he took the pump head off the 40 and put it on the 30 I guess until he got the part for the 30. When he re assembled the pumps the wrong pump head went on the wrong body causing both pump outlets to be off 10 to 15 degrees. Now he did state that his return pipe was too short so he may have left the pumps this way because it worked for his set up, I don't know but it would have been nice to know. I was just a little upset coming back home and wasting 4+ hours. and I never hit any of the aquarium stores on the way back due too the time and traffic. Moral to this story when you do modifications or repairs to equipment be upfront and disclose what you did to the equipment so the buyer can make an informed decision about the purchase.

That sucks! Hopefully it's a lesson learned for both of you though, ask more questions and give more answers.

I always do, I been buying from Brandon for at least 15 years but I got stuck in traffic south of Boston going and coming back. I usually hit unique and the other three around Salem.

Sarahandjason I agree but when a seller advertises a pump in perfect condition, works great, used four months, and removed from system because it was to powerful, I even got a picture and the pump looked darn good. Attachments:

It does look darn good! First thing I noticed in the picture was the output seeming to be sideways? Was this the problem? What was the gph on this pump again? And price? If your no longer interested?

Yeah it seems like he should of been more upfront with you about it. Should of been the first thing in his listing and if not it should of been the first thing he told you upon inquiring about the pump!
You have to always be upfront and honest about these things there's just no other way around it. Recently I worked out a deal to sell the dersea clam I've had for a couple weeks and 2 days later it started to decline in health, Due to it being in my qt tank to long without good lighting I believe? But I instantly messaged the person and told them I couldn't go through with the deal because the clam had started to regress further. Sucked to loose out on the sale but I wasn't going to sell an unhealthy clam to someone for my own benefit. I sure wasn't going to have them or me travel to see it and then realize what was wrong with it and not want it anyways ya know? Simple old saying "honesty is the best policy"

Can you return the pump (mail it, at his cost) and have him return it (again at his cost) with the correct head on it? Sounds like he admits to the mix up.

I didn't take the pump, I noticed the pump head was not square before I gave him any money and told him I was not taking the pump. The new set up I am doing it right and I am not mickey mousin anything. I was going to ask him to switch the pump heads but then he told me a pebble got caught in the 30 he had so he took the pump apart. There were so many issues I didn't want to play.

Iwaki does make some seriously nice pumps. We ran several at a store I used to manage for years. Never had a single problem with them.

We ran Iwaki's and Little giants. Little giants get noisy if they are not oiled regularly.
