I use reef crystals always have always will. It's what I started with and it's always done me right! If I'm paying extra for a little extra mag, cal and alk that's fine by me it's only a couple extra dollars and imho well worth it not because of the extras just because its the salt I like to use.

I always used tropic Marin pro reef. I switched to instant ocean and then to reef crystals and now I'm giving the tropic Marin a try again and honestly it's not worth the money. My corals grew just as good, some better with the instant ocean than they do with the tropic Marin pro reef. Needles to say, with tropic Marin being almost twice the price per 200gal mix. There's no question in my mind that I'm going to be sticking to reef crystals or Instant ocean for sure. Plus it's available anywhere.

I use regular IO ($45 for 200g box) and add bio-calcium.... for my sps tank I am going with an expensive salt E.S.V. ($85 for 200g mix)

I've also tried a few different brands, right now I'm using Red Sea Coral Pro. I feel like all the major brands are in the same ballpark.

I use Red Sea Coral Pro... I love it! Everything looks great and is growing well, no dosing on a lightly stocked tank. I'm not sure of the high alk that it mixes with...... 11-12dkh. However, I like the Mag/ Ca/ and PH levels it mixes with... 500/410/8.2 I'm moving to a 125g in a few months, not sure I want to pay such a high price. In my 29g, I don't mind spending more...
Confused and uncertain of what to use.

By the way... Rick at NEAS uses IO... Jason at Easy uses Salinity... They both love the products they use. I'm considering salinity.... Not certain though.

The confusion is that the professionals use something different than the limited "majority" here on this site. I would be interested to know what Lance uses and what he doses.
The confusion lies in what is stocked in the tank, frequency of water changes, what is dosed/amount/frequency... There are a lot of variables...
That's the confusion. Just because a salt is widely available does NOT mean it is the the best option. There are a lot of factors in play here, not just majority rules.

I honestly believe if you test your levels and keep them the same by what ever means u use your corals will not know what brand u use

I know Greg at Cultivated Reef switched from regular IO to Reef Crystals last summer.

I agree Speed. But there's something to be said by choosing a salt that does not require frequently dosing of numerous products. Of course there comes a point, depending on many variables, that dosing of a 2 part may become necessary; however, a salt with a good portion of the major ingredients may reduce dosing requirements possibly saving time and money in the long run. It's all debatable... I guess that's why there are many salt brands out there.

ive had dose nothing just 10% water changes & parameters right on money except iodine is low in crystal reef. I have had to ad that to get where needs to be. but i guess it depends how much your corals are sucking it up. In that case u might have dose to ur needs whatever salt u get. In 125 i bet take u while b4 u fill that up nuff to deplete the additives in the salt due to the amount of water volume as compared to a 29g
