So I had portland glass cut my baffles at 12 inches for the bubble trap and 15 to separate the last two sections with my return in the middle and refugium on the end. The drain/skimmer section will be 12 inches and the bubble trap will be 2 inches for each section so 4 inches wide total and the last two sections wil be 16 inches each Will this work alright???

Should work fine. I have found however that most of my sumps don't need the extra glass baffles, I generally buy a skimmer that doesn't produce micro bubbles or I point the drain of skimmer the other way. I have found however that regardless of where you put the Refugium that my chaeto grows crazy in low flow or high flow. It doesn't really care.

When I build a sump I usually divide it into three or four sections using baffles. The first section is the tank drain/filter sock/skimmer area and this is where I install the first bubble trap. The second area is for a deep sand bed and refugium I usually have a bypass to eliminate some of the flow through he refugium. The third is a small zone for chemicals, carbon. or anything else. The fourth zone starts with a bubble trap and houses heaters and return pump. Depending on what size the sump is sometimes the third zone is omitted. Using baffles help with slowing water movement and allowing for more dwell time it also allows you to set the water level to where you want in each section.

the only thing I would do different is add a piece of glass to the skimmer side so water has to go under one then over the next

I'm gonna have a tee in my return because I'm using a large mag 1800 pump and it reroutes some of the return flow into my refugium so it doesn't overwhelm my DT

With a 55 gallon the possibilities of what you can do are endless as a 4 foot area is huge. Is the sump going to be in the basement and what size is the display tank?

BriMc is quite right. You can have some real fun with the 55. Keep in mind that water will be moving through it much faster than a 30/40 breeder. Having trouble understanding your design/placement of baffles. Describe in as much detail as you can from left to right. eg. 14" spacing to 15" tall baffle, 2" inch spacing to 12" baffle raised 2" off bottom, 2" spacing to 12" baffle, 10" spacing for return etc etc
Also, what size return pump will you be using/gph through the sump?

He is using a Mag 18 which is 1500 GPH at 0 head and 1100 GPH at 5' head straight.

I just really need to know if it's gonna work or not I already have the glass cut and just waiting to hear back so I can start siliconing them in or not my design is gonna be just like this but with 12 inch baffles for the bubble trap and 15 for the baffle in between the other sections. Will that work or will it flow over the bubble trap because it's higher? I thought it would work

+1 This is a normal sump set up. You should be good to go! Go get that silicone ready, and bring a rag with you to wipe your hands off frequently! Lol

its also fairly easy to bend pvc pipe to eliminate the 90degree elbows
just tape off the end of the pipe pack it full of sand (this will make it hold its shape) then heat it slowly wile bending it.... I have an electric stove so thats what I use to heat the pipe without burning it also the sink is right there to cool it quickly
