So It seems Bertha is made of rubber... She's not only 14 inches across but now she's stretching herself almost the full depth of my tank! (21 inches) It's so crazy the shapes and forms these guys can form into! Attachments:

they just have no brain so who knows why they move. sometimes u find something bothering them others u dont. sometimes they stay for quite a while and then one day they move who knows

I've had her for almost a year, she set herself down when I got her, then she started moving like a month or two ago

Found this and thought it was an interesting perspective:
Basically they have a "nerve net" system. They certainly respond to stimuli, but do not "think" as we know it. But I would also offer that looking at nervous systems from a strictly human perspective is also probably limiting. Brittlestars (and all echinoderms) also do not have a brain, but have exceedingly complex behaviors and sensory structures. Basically we don't understand how they work. But that doesn't mean they're stupid..........They just don't have a brain to be stupid! Lol
