Back in May the heater on my 30xh got stuck on. I lost everything except my blenny, some snails and a pistol shrimp it was well over 82 degrees when I found this had happened. Yesterday at 5 right before leaving work I did my pre-weekend check in my Nano and the temp had climbed to 82.2 (it was 77 3 hours earlier). Again the heater failed. This could have been such a catastrophic failure again and I definately probably would just quit the hobby after nuking two tanks full of livestock. I'm looking for a fail safe if a heater gets stuck on. What do you all do? I've seen the JBJ true temp controller as well as one by Azoo. My big question is do they cut the power to the heater if the temp in the tank exceeds the set value on the controller?

that's exactly what they're supposed to do. you could also get 2 smaller heaters instead of 1 large one.. this way if one sticks on it'll take longer to wreak havoc/you'll likely notice sooner... on the flip side, if one doesn't kick on, you'll likely have the other one working. now if they both stick on, you're screwed, but little to no chance of that actually happening. hope that helps.
on a similar note, my tank use to get up into the mid to high 80's. in these situations i'd always kill the lights, open up my cabinet for sump ventilation, and use my redneck chiller - a frozen 2 liter bottle of water in the sump. i'd have a ton of RODI ice cubes on hand too, and use those for top-off. it was a pain in the ass, but usually helped drop the temp to a more manageable level. i never lost anything due to temp, though i have mostly very hearty softies and no SPS.
i've since scored a killer deal on a JBJ chiller on craigslist, and also have an Apex controller on the way, so I think my days of stressing about temperature are now over. sucks to spend the $ but i like to be able to ENJOY my tank and not worry that my livestock is on the way out... that sucks the fun out of the hobby real fast, especially if you're as paranoid as i am!

I bought a used blue line heater controller from deep sea, after I herd heaters were burning out the outlets on the reefkeeper power bar it is great it can run up to 1000w I have 2, 400w heaters on it
the controllers work with a temp probe you can set the controller to like 80-81 and set the heater to 78 then if the heater fails your controller will shut it off or just crank the heater all the way up and use the controller to turn it on and off
