i tested my mixing water a couple weeks ago (for the first time in a while) and realized the nitrates were measuring really high. so i bought new filters for my r/o. water still producing high amount of nitrates. so i replaced the membrane. still not producing 0ppm water, more like 20.
it's not a faulty test, i tested some distilled water and it came up 0. i'm using a Seachem test which seems to have a pretty good rep.
my mixing container was just cleaned so i don't think that's the issue. this leads me to believe it's possibly the poor quality of my tap water? i don't know a lot about my water source (i rent).

frustrating because i've nearly paid as much for the filters replacements as the R/O unit itself
