This is exactly why it's hard to sell coral. Not too many people realize how much it cost to house coral to sell. First you need all the equipment, then corals, then salt/additives then the power bill. Then maybe a loss at the end of the day. Ha.

Do you have electric heat? Electric heat in Maine in the winter will almost always run you over 250$-300$ with out reef tanks so add the metal halide on top of that plus the rest of your tank and Walla!!! Power bill is 400$+
If you do have electric heat obviously there's nothing you can do about that but you'll save your money back in no time switching to led's from halide lamps.
Another thing to think about is it's cold as s+!t outside so your tank heater is probably working overtime comparatively speaking to summer time. Probably have a 300 watt heater that's on double the time your used to it being on.with power bills I've noticed you have to add up all the little things to get the big number.

Space heaters alone are crazy. Coupled with hearing the rest of your house. Don't help that it's 3 levels to. Maybe look into putting a small wood stove in the basement instead of the space heaters.
