did the crab hitchhike from live rock to your tank? It does sound like gorilla crab. they will kill everything. they usually only come out at night when all lights off. If you have red leds you can turn off all other lighting but the reds and watch for them to come out try catch and remove. I dont know why but perhaps they cant see red lights.

How do you tell if it is an emerald or "gorilla" crab?

This is the dreaded gorilla crab. This is an actual crab I pulled out of one of the display tanks at aquacorals while I worked there. It was about the size of a quarter. This crab was literally tearing off hand sized chunks from some of the big leather corals in the tank over night. All the mithrax crabs have spoon shaped claw tips. Any crabs that have pointy tipped claws with the exception of porcelain and acro crabs are generally not reef safe.

My last porcelain got torne to bits in less then 12 hours i have the worst luck with decorator inverts
