I've heard good results, but I personaly use Randy's two part recipe. I got a jug of prestone Driveway heat for calcium chloride as many say it's fine and have used it for years, I bake some arm and hammer baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to make soda ash(sodium carbonate), and Epsom salt for magnesium sulfate (haven't found magnesesium chloride locally). I believe BRS recipies is on par with Randy's just premeasurred and packaged.

They were colored awsome and growing fast. Until I switched salts and filter media, and didn't check my cal and Alk before continuing to dose as usual. Before it all went down hill this summer.

I use BRS 2 Part. I like it and have good luck with it. You can go pre-portioned or bulk depending on your needs. Jumping on my soapbox... seamonkey84 - I'd be careful with using driveway deicer or encouraging others to. Yes, it is (mostly) Calcium Chloride but that is analogous to saying Tap Water is the same as RO/DI Water. In driveway deicer there is no guaranteed (or even implied) level of purity. There are possibly/probably any number of impurities in it. And rightly so - why would you pay a premium price for high purity CaCl to just throw on your driveway? Also, the level of impurities may vary from batch to batch - you may get away with using it for a long time without bad effects. You may also end up with accumulated toxins or you may just run into a really bad batch. On the other hand, supplements made for reef tanks should(!) utilize lab-grade, high purity versions of chemicals that you can rely on and so that you are only adding the elements you want.

Found this as well (my emphasis added) www.calciumchloride.co.uk/calcium_chloride_grades.htmlAvailable Grades- Calcium Chloride Industrial Grade - Calcium Chloride Food Grade - Calcium Chloride based Ice-melting Agent The above product consists of calcium chloride and sodium chloride as the main ingredients together with a certain erosion-inhibiting agent. It can also be blended according to the customer's requirements. The product is widely used for melting snow and ice and preventing frost damage on roads, pavements and similar surfaces. If the possibility of an unknown erosion-inhibiting agent doesn't scare people away from putting this in their tanks I don't know what will.

Yes I know using things not designated for tanks is not recommended. I was hesitant at first, but I read some reviews and went with it. That said, after this jug of road salt I am going to be using BRS two part.

Not 100% on topic but I started using Kent nano reef 2 parts about 6 weeks ago. I used regularly for 3 weeks and noticed my tank started going downhill fast. Brown slim everywhere corals not fully opening. I was not testing during the application. I stopped using it did 2 big water changes and my tank did a full 180. Everything is so happy now. I don't think ill ever use any 2 part ever again. Ill stick with good water changes and kalkwasser.
