How big does the hole need to be? Is a quarter inch sufficient in a 3/4" line?

That would work, but I went with 1/8 on mine. Once a week I scrape them to make sure they are clear, and I do a power failure "test" once a week (also known as a water change).

That is definitely big enough. I will say u could go a little smaller if u wanted too. R u drilling in the bottom of the elbow.

I decided to go the safe route and put the return real shallow. That way I can maximize the amount of water in the system and still be sure I don't overflow the sump. I changed my return line from a 1" to a 3/4" just because it looks a lot better on a smallish tank, but it definitely does make the pump work harder.

What type of pump are you using?

What type of pump are you using? Speedwave DC. It's got an adjustable flow. I had to turn it up some to get the same flow through the smaller pipe.

Just got something similar to the speed wave from Easy Aquariums. Love the fact that you have the ability to adjust the flow, and the more back pressure from the pipe the less energy it uses.
