I set up a 10 gallon tank with water from a water change, added a hang on filter with some carbon and phosban, added new reef sand, some dry base rock, and a small piece of live rock. I added 4 types of macro algae, and seeded the tank with tisbe pods, the intent being to raise them in there to feed my mandarins. Cyano is going crazy, I keep cleaning it off, but it keeps growing. Any advice how to control it? It ran about 2 weeks before any sand or rock were added. No fish at all.

What kind of light do you have for the macro algae? Certain color spectrums actually help cyano to grow. Have you tested the water parameters?

Make sure you have good water circulation too.

Thanks for the replies, I had an extra power head to circulate things, but turned it off recently when I read it would hurt the pod population. The current light is a basic freshwater fluorescent bulb, thinking the macro wasn't too picky...I could easily replace the bulb with a Coral Sun or similar?
If lighting is the issue, any advice for my mini fuge in my display tank? It is small, with a small 4w 8k bulb there, cyano grows there also, but it is easily managed by wiping the surface every few weeks.

I had a little Cyano problem awhile back and was told to check my lighting as well. I had a couple older bulbs so I changed them out, did some major siphoning and it was gone. I'm sure where you added dry rock straight in the tank the po4 and no3 are fluctuating a bit so it maybe hard to get rid of with the access nutrients in your tank? Have you tested the po4 and no3? Last question what color is the Cyano?

I know new live sand and carbon can add po3 po4. From experiance and reading 0 even if you test. I had more cyano from new tank setups with leds.
I use brs 5 stage plus ro/di water. Less problems.
I just use a 13w regular cfl bulb for 2 fuges i have. Worked way better then when i was using the 50/50 coral sun, and cheaper.
When i add new sand i keep the fuge light on for weeks. I would let my cheato macroalge compete for the nutrients. I heard cheato doesnt go asexual and bloom. Also wont release nutrients back when the lights turn off. (I just set up a 40b w/ sump a month ago.)
I also like kents phosphate sponge. I used half a dose and worked fantastic. Worked for me great.
