Hi all, Scoobnoob invited me to this forum after I purchased some frags from him this weekend. My name is Mike and about eighteen years ago I owned and operated an exotic pet store - Lassen Aquariums - in Susanville, CA. Back then we had thirty freshwater tanks and twelve saltwater, plus all sorts of critters. This is my first tank since and so much has changed/evolved. I used to be knowledgeable but now I'm just a noob. Feel free to ask any questions, give any advice, offer any services, call me stupid, etc. I talked the wife into a 29 gl nano cube because it was on sale. Started off with a few lbs. of live rock from Pet Pro. I added a couple damsels (Petco) to help it cycle. This is how we did it back then, folks. I've seen learned. I added some more live rock, a couple snails, and rehomed the surviving damsel (all at Petco). Added some corals. So far I've bought them from Pet Pro. It's been up about six months now. I've just finished replacing the original fluorescent lights with all new LED. I purchased the lights off eBay on sale.

if it's been 6 months your tank should be cycled by now??? Do you have a good test kit? I'm sure scoob and you talked about allot but just out of pure curiosity what are you running for light cycle what percentage do you turn them up to?(if they are dimmable)? How long do you turn them on per day? Sorry for all the questions you'll learn I have a problem with typing to much! Sent from my SCH-R530U using proboards

I do 5% water changes weekly, I know lots of people do 10% but I have no fish right now so... It is cycled now. It cycled a few months ago. I just haven't learned how to cycle a tank without cruelty to fish.
The lights are four 12 inch 36 watt pro true lumina LEDs. Two 12k white and two blue. I just purchased two more... another blue and ultraviolet. My wife doesn't like the open top look so I'm confined to what fits in the hood of the nano cube. I have them on a timer, they are dimmable. They get about 13 hours of light a day.
No problem.

Welcome fauther! I'm in a similar position although I started back up about 2 years ago. About 17 years ago I owned Global Aquatics in Minneapolis, a marine fish import and wholesale business.
It is amazing how much has changed especially available equipment and invertebrate livestock, all for the better!
Where are you located if you don't mind? I can add you to our map if you want...

well now that your tanks already cycled out doesn't really matter but in order to cycle your tank without adding fish is to add ammonia from the hardware store its only certain brands though. it has to have no additives theone I used to use on my freash water tanks was blue ribbon from true value. now obviously you have to put small amounts in and there are calculators to do the math for you on how much you use I'll get the link.

Mine has two power heads and a wave maker so we'll see. Mostly my plan is to have three fish and probably, I don't know, basically a mixture of corals. I'll have to wait and see how my lighting is.
