Not really one to praise or bash any store particularly. And I don't know if this is breaking any MFS rules, but I just stopped by the Auburn Petco saltwater section......
I can only say, atrocious. I know it's not the best but it's usually at least somewhat maintained. Dead fish in almost all the tanks, dying clarkii's, shriveled up clams and anemones. A new shipment of gorgonians with some sort of algae covering them. Hair algae and cyano in every tank..... I couldn't even stay in there. The fish were so miserable. Most hanging out near the surface....
Just ashamed of them and completely at a loss for those animals.

Oh and half the system wasn't working so all the fish were crammed into six small tanks

They seem to keep moving half the livestock into one half of the tanks so they can "fix" the other half and make it look pretty for a couple weeks after. It's a very sad scene there.

they've always been like that last time I went there the guy that was working the fish section was trying to make a joke about all the dead fish and it pissed me off! I went off on him and haven't been back since!!! it's not a reflection of all petco's though. maybe some but not all! they just can't seem to keep consistent staff in there that know what there doing! As with any company that's more concerned with over head then quality there's always going to be problems. petco in so.portland and bangor I have always heard better things about though. the one in augusta is hit or miss and I personally stay away from topsham petco as well.

I have wanted to get a job there just to try to fix things, but I know the pay would be horrible, and the rest of the aquatic staff there is so bad, it would be a long uphill battle (speaking only about this location).

Omg I went this weekend just because they were having a big sale and I was getting chemicals and additives and foods crazy cheap. But once again it was bad there was a neon green trumpet coral with like 6 heads and it was covered with hair algae and spirits aptasia! Fish were sad looking and the worst part about it all is they have 2 fish cycling there tanks that just crashed! And the actually ordered new fish and shoved them in the 6 tiny tanks that are open and had all those sick fish in there! Not even talking about the fish that were dead! I normally don't talk sh!+ about stores but newbies beware please take caution before making a purchase here at least for the foreseeable future

I have to agree that they are not very impressive, and I don't trust the quality, but what are other options that are reasonably close by. It is unfortunate that Deep Sea Creations closed.

Easy aquariums isn't too far of a drive from auburn plus you'd be supporting a local fish store and their customer service is top notch the drive time is worth the investment in our tanks.

Thanks, I just checked out their website and facebook, I'll have to make my way down there. I would much rather buy from a place like that than petco.

That's for sure easy aquariums is the way to go not only is it a good store but there very "easy"to talk to! they don't try to cheat you like other stores.you'll save your gas money very quickly with just a couple purchases.and believe it or not they will actually give you good advice instead of just telling you what you want to hear. I had someone at pet co tell me when I was just starting my tank that I didn't need a skimmer! Most import form of filtration in a salt water tank imo. Sent from my SCH-R530U using proboards

And I stopped by today to grab some frozen Mysis, and they were completely out of all frozen fish food except for a few packs of bloodworms. It looks like they won't be carrying it anymore.

I was there 2 weeks ago and complained about the state of their tanks. They were very defensive about it. Everyone seems on edge there. I feel like making one of those commercials like the SPCA does, with a Sarah Mclachlan song playing...showing the dying fish being eaten alive by their tank mates.

The sad part is that there's places just like it everywhere it's just allot harder to see it then to hear it.
