I broke down my 50 to plumb a sump, and moved all my soft corals into a 29, and they have never looked happier. In the 50, they were under a 4x T5 fixture. That fixture blew a ballast, so in the 29 they are under my old 2x power compact fixture. Anybody got any ideas? I'm thinking maybe the narrower tank contains the light better, but really a 4-bulb T5 should be enough for soft corals, right?

Most definitely should be enough for any soft corals especially given the right color combinations.but my first thought (not that it's right) Idk but I'm assuming the 29 was shallower so light penetration is better also less light can also cause your corals to open up and spread out more to try and catch more light this can be visually appealing.just out of pure curiosity what brand of bulbs were you using and what colors?

What does 'happier' mean? Larger, more expanded? This could be because they are now under lower light and are reacting by expanding their available surface area.

The 29 has no sand bed, so the 50 is actually slightly shallower. The T5s are ATI, 2 Blue Plus and 2 Coral Plus. The PCs are Sun Paq, 1 10000K and 1 actinic.

my guess from your layout with the ati bulbs is that you should add in a 10,000k white with 3 of the other 4 bulbs you should have at least one in your set up I love ati bulbs but the ones you have focus mostly on the blue and purple spectrum and you need some yellows, oranges, greens, and so on as to make it full spectrum I ran 3 ati bulbs coral plus blue plus and actinic along with a normal 10,000k and all my corals loved it even a few sps. that I have were doing really good before the switch to led's. still doing good with the led's to though :-D

Given that your corals were under higher intensity light before, the new conditions may make your corals think it's dusk/night/dawn, when polyps typically extend to feed.

Thinking about it now, light is not the only variable that's changed. The 29 only has about 2/3 the flow that I had in the 50. The 29 is at about 14x/hr vs. about 23x/hr in the 50. Think I should try dialing the 50 back a little when I put everything back in it?
