I was wondering what the opinions were on UV sterilizers, I am considering getting one, but I am wondering if they do more harm than good?

I like to run one on my QT tank you have to watch the heat though I tend to have to turn the heater down when running

I used a small one on my sh tank, and when I was breeding clowns.
I always ran the off a T in the return line, so not all the water went threw the uv it worked great as far as I know. never had any problems with parasites or anything

I have one in my sump that's undersized just to try to keep things under control but small enough so it doesn't kill all the good stuff as well? Idk if this is the right way but it's my way! Lol
Sent from my SCH-R530U using proboards

I like UV for QT tanks and fish only tanks, or if u are adding a lot of fish to a new reef tank.
Beside the obvious advantages they also will help cut down algae and bacteria growth in the water column. However for a well established reef tank I do not like them.

I decided to go with a smaller UV for now, Rob hooked me up with one. I expect to remove it once my tank is more established and stable.
