I've been running Chemipure Elite since mid august today I looked in my sump and saw that a seam had burst and there was free carbon all through it, don't know if any smaller peices made it into the tank. I cleaned out the sump entirely and did about a 35% water change in the process....is this going to end badly?? What should I watch for?

Chances are you should be fine. Just grab any pieces of carbon you may find in your display tank as they appear. On the other hand, had it been a contaminated carbon like Kent carbon, Every little piece could be leaching contamination back into your tank water. I don't think you have anything to worry about though. Still sucks! Have you ever tried these media bags. Its all I use now and I've had some last a couple years already. www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+4136+4249&pcatid=4249

Chemipure Elite has GFO (Granulated Ferric Oxide) in it. If that got out into your system AND if it was loaded up with phosphate or silicates it can release those pollutants back into solution. Probably not an issue but a possibility.
One reason I really like upflow canisters...
