I know this was discussed before back in the club swam days but don't remember what peoples thoughts were on using ocean water and sand in our tanks. I have heard of people doing it but don't remember the advantage/disadvantages of it or the safety since its cold water up here.

Pollution is the only major concern to be worried about. That and any bacterial or micro fauna die off that could happen when using ocean water from around here. Some people do it though.

a little would be ok but our water is green because of everything growing in it warm it up to 80 degrees and you will have a major algae bloom there is a guy in NY that uses ocean water he adds bleach and filters it after it sits for a week or something

If you are going to do it, make sure all of it gets filtered very well (micron filter) and then maybe add a uv sterilizer unit to the holding tank. Also check the water for phosphates and nitrates on a regular basis before using it. Depending on the season and the weather, those levels will vary time to time. You have to remember the gulf of Maine is a sea within a sea, nutrient rich waters from all our rivers sits for a while before getting mixed into the open ocean.

Probalby more work than it's worth. I used to keep critter in filtered seawater at the lab in Boothbay, but it wasn't a reef tank.
