hello my name is Thomas and i voulnteers and NEAS and i was told to go on this site and ask for help about how to set up a small frag tank. my idea is that i am going to get a 16 gallon innovative marine nuvo tank. the lighting on the tank is two 8 watt LED light. this tank is only going to be for corals. i want one fish in the tank to help with the water chemisty. i was wondering of i need to get a nano protien skimmer or will 20 % water change every week be adequate enough. my other question is what kind of corals are easy to frag. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm new myself, so take this with a grain of salt, but it's my understanding that the Nano size tanks can be tough to learn on. things shift Very quickly in a small tank. I'm not trying to discourage you by any means, and I hope that you have lots of success. be warned though; this hobby is addicting.

I am new also but the more watet you have the better. This way changes to water chemistry isn't so drastic.

no i am not really fimilar with how to keep corals. i have worked with corals a little but i would say that i do not know much about setting up a tank for corals. the tank will be 16 gallons. the tank demtions are Length: 23.62” Width: 12.2” Height: 18.66” the filtrations: Acrylic Filter Wall w/ Dual Overflows •(2) Media Baskets •Mechanical Sponges •Activated Carbon Sponges •Phosphate Sponges •(2) Flare Nozzles •Designated Heater Column •Designated Refugium Column

I would suggest getting a few soft corals to start with(ones you cannot kill with a stick) like mushrooms(technology not a coral), colts and xenia to learn from. They grow well, are cost effective, are easy to frag and do not need to much specialized care. I have some colts you can have for free to get you started. Just be aware that to have a truly successful frag tank on a larger scale you need to pick the type of corals to will grow and only cater to them.

I have a 24 Nano and have had great success with it, I would reccomemnd some bio filtration such as live rock, most frag tanks are plumbed into a much larger tank or have a fuge. You can follow what I've done with my Nano if you'd like. It has a 2" sand bed the first 1" is fine sand and about 15lbs of live rock, I run a media basket with chemipure elite and purigen, I switch it out every 3 weeks and leave the tank without either for 1 week between changes, I have taken out all the other filtration that came with my setup, in back I also run a chamber with Cheatomorphia under a seperate 6700k LED this light comes on at night and does not get into my main tank, this allows the cheato to photosynthesize while my coral isn't and leaves the PH stable, it also lets the cheato utilize nutrients in the water, I still runn a skimmer when the regular lights are on so my skimmer only runs for 8hrs a day and I do a 20% waterchange weekly. I also have an auto top off this will be very important for the volume of water your going to be using because it will evaporate quickly and if you aren't able to top it off yourself through out the day things will get stressed by the salintity swing, I have a electric float switch with an aqualifter plugged in, this makes things self sufficient for up to two days without me having to top off, if I go on vacation I switch my gallon jug with a 5 gallon pail no worries. Go with easy softies for beginner coral: Zoanthids, xenia, sinularia, capnella are all pretty hardy.

Hi Thomas!! Welcome aboard! :-) I have a 5gln frag tank that is not plumbed into my display. Definitely harder to keep, and when it comes to saltwater tanks bigger is always better lol. I can help you with some frags when your ready to

Yes on the heater. All of your livestock will come from tropical waters, close to 80°. What's got your interest in the tank size you chose? Is it space?Budget? Just curious

the reason i whant to go with the 16 gallon is becuase space is limited in the doorms and i already have a 20 gallon tank that is set up for fresh water. and the 16 gallon tank comes with power heads and built in filtration system. i am also dont whant to spend a ton of money on thing for a bigger tank. idealy i would love a 55 gallon reef tank. but i think the collage mught get a little upset at a tank that size.
