40 and 55 are both way too small for heniochus or tang. The point source flow from your maxi jets is pretty unfavorable for your fish. If they haven't yet the suction cups on your MJ will fail and you will wake up to a sand storm in your tank. I work for a service company. The majority of the account we get are people who are unhappy with their previous service co. A lot of them have 8 year old maxis on them. They have their uses. But not when there are koralias out there.
So i had my cherub angel jump from my tank like 2 months ago right. I woke up and after pouring my morning coffee i walk to the tank and see the angel on the floor. I grabbed it by the tail and started trying to resuscitate it by gently moving it up and down at the tank surface. It was very clear to me that it was having trouble swimming after this. So i turned off a bunch of powerheads to meet the needs of the sick fish. Less was better in that case

I got the power head given to me, I'm pretty much working with what I've got available man. So far the power head has been working quite nicely. I'm aware 40 and 55 are small for a tang but he's no where near full size yet and I've got some time to upgrade before he gets there. He was in a 35 octo for 2 years before i got him and one that was very poorly cared for at that so, it's not ideal but we're all living within or means right? I have a much nicer power head that allows a "laminar"(?) flow in my 55. Should this one threaten to drop and cause a sandstorm I'll hang it rather than suction it... when i bought the heniochus it was in a 20 gal at Petco...I'm really hear nor there about the situation now. Just netted to be more selective about what i buy...lesson learned. As far as my tanks and how they are running. All the fish I've had seem very happy and healthy. Even the tang. He eats a crap ton of nori...haha.

So, i hope that didn't come off offensive in anyway. I very much appreciate your input and pointers. like i said, I'm just doing the best i can with the resources I've got. I live the crap out of both my tanks and as soon as i can afford a laminar pump for the 40 I'm picking one up.

The idea of gluing your power head to a mag float was suggested to me when my cups stopped sticking, works like a charm!!!

Haha, it's good. So, my general consensus is that Petco is pretty much a craps shoot. Some people I've talked with have had nothing but bad experiences, others nothing but good. Then there are also those like myself who are about 50/50. One thing i have noticed is those who've had a good experience tend to go in and spend a long time there inspecting the fish in question. Also, they make sure the fish has been there for well over a week and is eating well. Basically, there's no such thing as too much scrutiny when selecting a fish from a big box store like Petco. Buyer beware, they can have good fish and their people are very nice, but don't feel bad about asking lots of questions because it's your wallet.

I tend to go in on shipment day then I can get whatever it is before it even leaves the bag. It's that much less stress the animal has to go through and its survival rate is already better that way

We've been very happy with our So. Portland Petco purchases. I can say they take good care of their regular customers! Seamonkey has given us some great deals on corals and occasional freebies (empty snail shells hermits, and some benneficial hitchikers) with coral purchases. Also, they're good at answering any questions that we've had along the way. They will special order things as well. I believe they're saltwater is a little less salty, though, so I would suggest a longer than normal slow drip acclimation for any fish or inverts. We tend to do 2 hr acclimation periods, and haven't had any issues.

I don't like to buy fish from there, but sometimes I can get a good deal on coral. But I always dip in coralrx and never let any bag water into my tank. You just need to be aware of where you are getting livestock and buy and treat accordingly.
Just my 2 cents...
