Looking for input on how to setup a reef sump for use on a freshwater tank. Spotfin, got any pics of your Ray tank sump?

Yes, I'll try and post some today. Nothing special about it, I used the same design for my salt tanks.

Most of the difference I see is that the first section is used as a wet dry filter instead of a skimmer.

left side right The water drains into the left side which is baffled, spills over the top of the baffle onto/across a filter pad, through the drip plate and down through pot scrubbers and sponges, and then under the baffle on the right side where the return pump is. The sump is a 40 breeder tank for size reference.

I'm thinking about switching my cadlights tank over to planted fresh and looking for sump ideas.

I'm thinking about switching my cadlights tank over to planted fresh and looking for sump ideas. It kind of depends on what kind of planted tank you're going for. Generally sumps and high tech(CO2 injected) don't mix well since the water flow through the sump off gasses the CO2 as fast as you inject it. What kind of setup are you planning?

Mainly low tech. Main display will be a pair of bala sharks, natural lake sand, driftwood and a handful of plants. Attachments:

Something kinda like that but with a few plants as well. Or maybe even like this but with a few plants. Attachments:

Been something I've wanted to do for years but I've been too rapped up in reef stuff and I'm finally getting board and tired of reef stuff enough to move out my saltwater stuff and completely switch over to freshwater.

For filtration I'm also thinking low tech. Micron filter sock and media basket with carbon and some other filtration media as well.

Bala Sharks have a bad rap for breaking tanks. Not sure if it's true or not. Let me know if you need any plants!

Only fish I've ever had that I was actually worried about breaking the tank was red bellied pacu. Years back I had a pair of them in a tank that they quickly outgrew and I swear they were pretty close to breaking the tank. Never had an issue with bala sharks in the past. Even larger ones. Iridescent sharks are a different story. They will spook just from walking by the tank sometimes.

Well if you're going low tech with limited number of plants CO2 off gassing shouldn't be an issue. With big fish like bala sharks making a lot of waste the extra volume of the sump will come in handy.
For filtration after your filter socks and chemical filtration take a look at seachem matrix or something similar. It is micro porous like live rock but with an even higher internal surface area so it takes less volume to get the same benefit when compared with live rock.

That's what I was planning to uses as a carbon media.
