So, I've been lucky enough to deal with my condylectous and my long tentacle without any stings although I hear it can suck. I remember when I was buying my condy and the lady at petco seperated him from his rock with her bare hands after another petco employee kept trying with the flat end of a tooth brush. I stood back like a child in amazement as she braved this unimagineable sting! I stood back with my hand over my mouth, jaw dropped and I remember asking "omg does it sting, does that hurt, will it hurt later" The chick probably thought I was some crazy lady LOL Anyways, I've never been stung or have a clue what it feels like. Do any of you have any stories about getting stung by an anemone or say a lion fish or foxface ect? What does it feel like? Spill

Got stung by a volitan lion many years ago. Like bigtoyman, it felt like I smashed my finger with a hammer. Mine hurt really bad for several hours. Still was a bit numb a week later.

That might have been Joan. Her hand was messed up for a while. Fire worms are really bad. They are very large, tan bristle worms - I had a huge one. I remember a well known Mass. reefer saying that it took almost a year to get all of the feeling back in his hand after being stung by one like this. My catch: I know there are some very nasty bacterial infections we can get. Some people have had to have fingers amputated because of them - anyone remember one of the speakers at the Boston Symposium? I think Mycobacterium marinum aka mycobacteria is a bad one: emedicine.medscape.com/article/1105126-overview You would be at a higher risk of getting any kind of infection if you have any cuts or abrasions that are submersed. Vibrio is another one that comes to mind. I think somehow related to cholera and can actually infect your blood - septicemia, but I forget really... Ah, here: www.freshwater-aquarium-fish.com/articles/human_aquarium_pathogens.htm

every time I go to deep sea I look at the gloves that go all the way up your arm and say I need a pair of them! one day I will buy a pair
I think your correct, joan had a bad reaction. if I remember correct she got stung threw the side of one of her fingers, went to the hospital and all they could do is give her morphine wile they googled how to treat the sting. she had said it turned half her hand black for a wile (months) I hope she got all the feeling back
first thing I ask someone that is wanting to set up a sw tank is if they are allergic to bees? if you are allergic to bees stay away from sw.

I wear those gloves now almost everytime I'm in a tank (salt or fresh) for me and my fish. I wear a lot of sunscreen in the warmer months so don't want any of that in the tanks.

After seeing Joan's blackened hand I have no interest in keeping fish that can sting me.
What I remember about the speaker at the BRS function was that the infection he got was being fought by his body / immune system by encasing the infection in calcium, which looked like a marble size hard nodule. The doctors kept injecting strong anti-biotics into the hardened nodule AND kept him on oral anti-biotics but the infection kept reoccurring. They finally fought it off but told him that if they continued to fail then they would have to amputate the finger. That's scary stuff.

I try to remember to wear gloves anytime I touch any rocks or frag disks in my tank. Bristle and vermetid snails tend to give me a nasty sting and make my fingers swell up and itch for days. Once in a while I get a few red spots on my arms after working in my tank. I can only assume its from bacteria or coral toxins.

I have never used gloves, my Bta has had tentacles stick to my fingers a few time, occassionally I'll get a small rash on my hands..especially if I'm not using carbon. Since acquiring the worlds most aggressive clownfish and being bit everytime I feed, or engage in maintainence I broke down and bought a set of gloves from Foster and Smith...It's one of those I probably should get them purchases. I'll post a review when I get them.
