For the past week i have been battling ick in my tank....so far i have lost my lemon peel, bi colored blenny and a damsel, and now all 4 of my clowns have it i would be devastated to lose any of them. Have done water change ( two small ones over a period of a few days) kicked up the skimmer and have avoided introducing anything new or different to the tank. Everything tests fine, nitrates are <20ppm nitrite 0 ph 8.0 alk 350. Any suggestions?

Personally I don't treat it. I just make sure everyone is eating plenty of nutritious foods. The treatments can be stressful, which is the worse thing an ick ridden fish needs. Hypo salinity is about the most drastic treatment I would try and it works pretty good. I treated 2 clowns once this way and it was amazing how ravenously hungry they were.

If you have inverts/corals, you wouldn't be able to do a true hypo treatment. You can lower salinity to around 1.020 to help the fish with hydration and reduce stress; and the inverts and almost all corals can withstand it no problem. Then do many 50% water changes as you can (like every day if you can have premixed and temp adjusted water). Start with blasting the rocks and caves with a turkey baster or powerhead then make sure to siphone the top layer of sand as well. That way you remove as many free cysts and new parasites as you can. Doing a freshwater dip on the affected fish for 5-10 mins, watch to make sure they aren't too stressed from the dip. That makes most of the parasites drop off, but make sure to not reintroduce the contaminated freshwater back into the tank. The best thing to do is to treat in a hospital tank and allow the tank to remain fish free for at least 6 weeks. A pain I know, I've been through it. But if you don't use a qt then never mind the hospital tank.

The hypo treatment I was referring to is done in a separate tank - like a 10g. I forget how low to go. I'm just the info is a short search away.

I only have the four clowns, a lawnmower blenny and a damsel (the last two show no signs of ick) I have mushrooms and two small leathers, and 3 rbtas. my tank is pretty empty. I'm going to try the freshwater dip if I can coax then into the net without adding more stress. they are pretty used to me, the two small ones I can scoop up by hand. the two bigger ones not so much but they don't swim away scared either so hoping they are easy to catch. I've got the skimmer running on high and replacing the water with fresh to drop the salinity. I stopped feeding everything but mysis, I love my clowns and hope can save them

the nems were a bit mad for a day but are fine now, they are pretty much fully opened today. I was able to freshwater dip all the clowns and they look so much better today. I'm gonna slowly increase the salinity back up to normal in a few days but as long as everyone looks good I'm gonna keep running it low for a couple more days, just in case. they look 100% better today compared to two days ago. I also fed 4 times a day in very small amounts, wish I would have done that before I lost my lemon peel but at the time he was the only one showing signs of illness and was impossible to catch. thanks everyone for the advice tho!!

Well the fish looked good for a few days so i started to bring the salinity back up, now they are showing spots again, mostly first thing in the morning, they seem to go away some during the day. I am picking up a small 5 gln tank to just use as a hospital tank. Be a few days to get that going tho, i guess it would be best to just leave it bare? no sand rock or anything? just clean saltwater? what can i do to eradicate the pests from my main tank?

I've never seen any long term success by doing hyposalinity treatments. Every time I've seen it done, the ick usually comes right back just as bad once the salinity is back up. Changes is salinity can be stressful to fish as well. Do you have any cleaner shrimp or cleaner gobies? I never have to treat in any way for ick and all I do is keep cleaner shrimp.

im pretty sure i have ick too but my 2 cleaner shrimp are awesome! my fish swim up to them, put their fins to the side and let the cleaner move them where ever they want them. A lot of you say you dont use chemicals to treat, so what do you do besides chemicals to help treat the fish? I don t have a qt tank also, can a starfish get ick?
