I'm all for building your own lighting, just trying to share my experience and some of the things that I didn't think of (or read about) as I was doing my research. Money wasn't really a deciding factor for me or my motivation for taking on the project.

I think Im going to go with a pair of used Kessil 360wa. I can do this for my budget buying used. Ots adjustable enough and bright enough for what Im looking to do. I really like this thread though. Everyone offered some really awesome ideas.

Everyone offered some really awesome ideas. Good choice imo, if there's a hood I would consider adding a couple T5's to the tank as well. Especially where it's a client tank, you'll want it to be nice and bright. Leds are great but they do have a dark kinda look to them.

^^Especially the Kessils. They are almost like spot lights, the largest complaint I've seen in the reviews is the lack of coverage.I don't think you'll be happy with 2 over a 4' tank

Yeah I tried 2 A360we's over my tank before I got the Radions and both me and my corals weren't happy. At that time I wasn't supplementing with T5's though or it may have been different? Kessils are awesome lights for sure but there's a lot of shadowing.

Think he could get away with 3 150w? Where it's going to be just Zoas and softies I think it'd be plenty of light for growth. The coverage would also be decent and within the price range.

I have a center brace that would mess with the 3 light thing and you would end up with weird lighting combo I was going to go blue white blue white

Kessil A150w? Those are only like 40W aren't they? With it being softies 2 A360we's would probably be enough to keep the corals happy. I'm talking more about viewing the tank. Most leds give a very dim look and in a tank that's set up for the viewing public I'd want it to be nice and lit up.

At a $400 budget for a 4' tank you're going to need to sacrifice somewhere. Either spread, wattage, or quality. 3 isn't an option anyway with the center brace but I read a thread on RC where a guy had 150's over a 140 gallon softie tank and was thrilled with the results. If I wasn't banned I'd try to find the thread.

Couple of Chinese black boxes!!!! You could have 2 with built in timers for $300-400. Not the "best" all around, but you can defiantly grow the hell out of zoas! I still use Chinese over all of my tanks until I sell a couple of bounces. That being said I grow my 2 wwc bounces under these!! I built the rack for $40.
