First of all, I know we always say research before you buy, but I think 95% of what we add to our tanks is impulse. What I always do when I get somerhing new is look for it on either liveaquaria.com or cultivatedreefs.com. Those will usually give you a good idea of placement and any other preferences. Plus it will usually make you drool for something you wanna get! And by the way you can never have enough! There will ALWAYS be something different you'll wanna add! Been doing this for 20+ years and I've never been completely satisfied with what I have. You've chosen a very expensive hobby to partake

Haha the fun has just begun!

Ok. So my suggestion to you is stick to lps and softies. You can get nice pieces of these that will grow fast with proper care. I know I'm gonna catch flack for this, but avoid sps until you know your ready. You can have some extremely beautiful garden tanks with non-sps. IF YOU DO get sps, try to go for easier ones to start (ie birdsnest, poci...)

Sps (Acropora) should always be an after thought for newer reefers. Your tank needs to be mature and stable before you dive into the harder to keep stuff. This even goes for some harder to keep Lps. I have a big colony of zoas you can have! They were supposed to go to someone else but it's been months and they never came to get them so there all yours. I can bring them to the swap? Or if your in the Dresden area let me know.

I have a much harder time keeping high end LPS than I ever have with SPS. Not trying to confuse the OP just telling my experience. SPS aren't hard to keep with today's lighting. They aren't beginners corals but neither are most LPS IMHO.
As I type this I realize that I have thousands of dollars in technology running my reef tank. "Hard to keep" becomes relative.

First as to flack, I know a lot of you out there are mostly into fragging sps. Secondly, Rakahrd, if you're going to the frag swap, I can probably throw you a couple of freebie starters. Thirdly, Jason, where's my free zoas!!!! I'm still working on garden

Another suggestion to you Rakahrd is to look at the lists of frags people have available to bring to the swap and research these. You'll be able to get a good idea of what's available that you can handle in your tank, plus you can usually get them for really good prices!!!
