I always test before a waterchange to see if the tank needs it. stability is the key to keeping a reef.

With my high nitrates though, I kind of need to. I generally change the water once a week. I've been trying to do it every 4-5 days now to help get rid of them.

20% water change on a 55 gallon tank will be 11 us gallons. 10% water change would be basically 5.5 us gallons. I wouldn't do any more than one 20% water change and then keep with the 10% at very most. Changing too much water at one time can really disrupt the tanks chemistry.
