Thank you guys SO much! My test kit is API-lol. I just bought it about a week ago. Previous to that all i had was those dip strip kinds of tests that suck balls. LOL I thought Api would be 1000x more accurate and better all around. Right now in my tank my PH is between 8.0 and 8.2, my ammonia is a zero and my nitrites are at zero as well. It's just the damn nitrates being at 40 ppl thats the problem.
I'm gonna try moving my power head, should i point it at the ground?
Thank you guys soooo much for your help. Everyone on here has been SO nice and helpful!

I received the new filters today and replaced them in my RO unit... I am still waiting on receving my new RO membrane. I am going to replace that as well... I let it run for about 30 minutes after i changed the filters and finally got a TDS reading of 0!!!!! Then i filled up a tote again and did another huge water change... finally the Nitrates are down to 2. I am gonna wait and see if the Vodka/Vinegar can keep up now. If not i am going to bring them completely down to 0 with two ore three more water changes every day and then up the vodka dose a little bit more.
Oh bio balls! yeah thats funny lindsey! I heard the same thing - oh they are awesome! And they are if you constantly clean them! EF that! I took out all my bio balls! and replaced them all with live rock.

Well, i completly changed out my filter with a sump system today so hopefully that should start helping with the bio-load and I did just buy a little over 50 lbs from Ryan on top of the 30 or so i had so im HOPING this will all start chipping away at the nitrates too. I do plan to order a new filter set as well, but not until NEXT pay day! lol Gets real expensive!

Well, two days ago I took out the bio balls and the bio wheel filter system and my nitrates have seemed to go down. As far as the vodka and sugar methods, I don't know what dosage I should do and for how long so I've been doing water changes and cut back on feeding as much but since I got the new sump/skimmer it seems to be doing a bit better. Does anyone know how long it takes for nitrates too turn into nitrogen in the sand bed after you've set your tank up?
