This skimmer is doing something, but I think it's light and the smell isn't rough so I assume it's not doing what I want. Also my return into the tank from the sump is pulling water out faster then it's coming in. Any ideas. There are no valves on anything to slow down or speed up the process. This was all working for previous owner.

I would plumb in a ball valve just above your return pump. Then you can dial it in.

This^^^ But also you told me it was working the day we talked, so I'm wondering if your starting to loose the syphon in your overflow? You don't want the syphon to break because it'll flood your sump into your tank and then onto your floor. Check the U tube in your overflow. Also possibly some debris stuck in your overflow line? I checked and rechecked the overflow and it seems to be working fine. there is no air in it. what is happening is the sump will hold water or it's level for a day or so and then slowly it starts creeping back down 2 lower than the the sump pump is then it starts blowing air I really don't understand this.

The water is evaporating, your tank level won't change but your sump will, as it evaporates out you need to replace it with fresh RO water, have you set your max water level in your sump yet?

I wondered about that but wasn't sure if it was the culprit or not. Going to look in to making one too I think. And as far as making one, are they a full time use or a get by fix until getting a decent one is an option?

And as far as making one, are they a full time use or a get by fix until getting a decent one is an option? I'd suggest buying one to tell you the truth. I was going to diy one but didn't want to mess with electrical and saltwater. But they are pretty simple if you don't want to swing the 30$-40$used or 60$-100$new. You'll need a low voltage relay, a 2$ extention cord, float switch and an aqua lifter pump. Oh yeah and a bucket! Lol Sent from my SM-N910R4 using proboards

+1 "float switch and an aqua lifter pump. Oh yeah and a bucket" most tanks lose 1g-2g of water a day, sometimes more in the winter (air is dryer)
