I went down to Mass this past Saturday to visit a few stores. I ended up buying a nice torch and a fluorescent green Galaxy frag at Love The Reef. I also picked up three 1.5 inch Lyretail Anthias from Unique Aquaria. I put them in QT, admired them for a little while, then went to bed.
I woke up the next morning to find all of them covered with Ick, I was disappointed but not surprised. After many texts from Steve and web research I decided to try Hypo Salinity. I brought down the salinity from 1.026 to - 1.009 over a couple of days ( I've since read a wet web article that recommended that the fish be put into a fresh water dip and then placed directly into hypo.... I thought that was very interesting and clever). The ick is no longer on the fish and they are eating like pigs. The majority of articles I read said to keep the fish in hypo for 4 weeks after the spots are gone, so I've got quite a journey of trying to maintain an acceptable ph with such a low salinity.
I'm quite surprised at how well the fish are doing in hypo as their parasitic friends are literally exploding into oblivion..... I hope.
Just thought I'd share this experience with everyone.

Interesting that the ick showed up overnight. Would be good to run it for a few weeks, and maybe raise the temp a little to speed up the process. Good luck.

I have had great success with hypo and a slightly higher water temp (79-80). Ich can show up fast depending on the fish.......Anthias are a "delicate" fish, so it's not surprising it showed up that fast.
Keep feeding them, and they'll be fine.

the problem is most lfs keep salinity low you bring the fish home and throw it in a qt tank with normal salinity and it is stressed to the max. ich sets in in hrs...
this is why I dont bother with fish qt anymore. acclimate it to your water, dip in formalin/methylene green solution and release takes 15 min and never had a problem... the only fish that has ever showed ich after this treatment was a powder blue tang and it was around a month and a half later.
for coral quick fw rinse and good to go

Be careful with hyposalinity as an ich treatment. Some strains are resistant to hypo. Hope it works out for you though.

Didn't work out well for me. Ick went away for about four days, the fish were eating well and were in great health during that time. A couple days ago I woke up to find them covered with ick, much worse than before. I lowered the salinity a little more, this afternoon I found 2 of the fish dead, the last is hanging on. I was going to get a bottle of cupramine but didn't have the time today. If it holds on for another day I will get a bottle, I doubt it will though. Very frustrated by this.

Walmart has stopped carrying this but a few stores may have some left in stock. I did some quick research and found that Aquarium pharm has dropped this from their product line. If you can get it pick it up now Amazon is selling it for 25.00 for 4 ounces shipped, Ebay 16.99 for 3/4 ounce.

It doesn't even show Biddeford in the list of stores, but all the other stores around are showing stock.

Just read this? An antidote. AmQuel will quickly bind and detoxify malachite green, as well as methylene blue and potassium permanganate. So if you get in a shipment of fish and use AmQuel to detoxify ammonia for drip acclimation adding quick cure wouldn't do anything? Unless you changed the water after you dripped. Anyways found it here thought I'd share www.skepticalaquarist.com/formalinSent from my SM-N910R4 using proboards

I have a dozen and a half questions. How big is your QT tank -- 20 gallonsHow long has it been set up -- couple days before I got the fishWhat are you using for filters -- two traditional filters... aquaclear and another I got from Jason... way over filtered.. both media compartments are full of fluval ceramic bio cylinders that have been in my sump for over a monthwhat are you using for water when you do water changes - water from my display to set it up and using freshly made water for water changeshow often are you doing water changes -- every three days, 3 gallonsare you aerating the water --- only with the waterfall effect from the filtersWhat is in your QT tank are you giving the fish hiding places ... two pieces of pvc and a heaterwhat sixe heater is in your /QT tank --- 100 watt cobalt neothermIf you are using freshly made up water are you checking all your parameters... yes, ph via api test kit and a refractometer for salinity that I calibrate at least every other use.

Everything seems to be in check. Were you checking for ammonia and nitrite in the QT ?

I was dosing a little prime daily. I was also vacuuming detritus daily with a length of airline tubing and rinsing the filter material about every other day. I was also running a little carbon as well.. However, I did not test for ammonia or nitrite due to the amount of bio filtration in the filters and because I was so careful about removing detritus daily.
I may have been remiss in checking those parameters but I felt I had my bases covered well.
