Always hear the terms "new school" and "old school" reefing. So I thought it'd be fun to figure out what everyone thinks they are? I'm going into crazy depth but to me Old school: #1-K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid) #2- Never tries anything on their reef until it's tried and true for years #3- Doesn't like new tech. leds, fancy pumps, ect #4- Don't really like crazy colored corals just sold simple colors and lots of browns and greens? (Mh lighting) New School: #1- Over the top complicated science lab reef #2- Tries new things and believes in Research and development for newer products #3- Loves new tech and is always trying to up grade #4- The brighter and more colors on a coral the better, yellow, red, blue, purple, green, pink and orange plus some. LOL as I said this is for fun and I just made up things. I don't know the true definition of the 2 I just wanted to lighten things up. I personally think I'm more new school but I never ever miss the chance to sit down and learn a few things from an old school reefer (veteran) experience is priceless.

I try to keep it simple with new technology, so I'm kinda in between new school and old school.

for me I would say, old school that learned the hard way. so I voted for both
you have to remember "old school" ways of doing things killed ALLOT of animals. leading companies to make better products to keep them alive... for example: I remember maxi jet pumps being the "best" around then came corollia untill ecotec pumps came out. lighting, when I started sw tanks it was- no t12 then came vho t12, mh, power compact,t-8, t5, now led and my guess soon to be true plasma.

"If you really want to be old school take a bicycle wheel and attach 8 torches to it and spin it on top of your tank!!" Lol now that's old school... Great shimmer to haha forgot about t2 self ballasted florescent also induction lighting. my biggest question is how old does a product have to be "oldschool"? I mean I run an older skimmer it came out in the 90's but if I switch to a cone skimmer, is it still "old school" or is it using the latest and greatest? and what about pumps. if I use a jebao wave maker over a scwd does that mean im not "oldschool" to me this term oldschool is an excuse used by someone stuck in there ways. meaning there isnt any other way out there but theirs, and you are wrong if you do it another way. (the reason allot of ppl stopped going to a certain lfs) its like comparing a high school diploma to a college degree... you can get by with the diploma but with a degree you excel

I feel like there really isn't a difference to tell you the truth. Besides just different cultures for different eras. If you've been using something that works for years then why change it? But if you never tried said thing (like an asm skimmer) then you don't know it's great so you'd probably try the latest and greatest. I think a lot of it is just human nature because the majority of people I believe hate change especially when it's working.(tried and true) I believe all reefing is obviously derived from "old school" but there's nothing wrong with improvement on an old design to make it better. If it makes it better... As far as Dsb are concerned it's a tried and true method but you have to go into it knowing you have a limited time Frame before it's time to start over. I watched a video with Mike paletta and he said if set up correctly a dsb and refugium with miracle mud should last 10 years? But does any system last forever?

I remember reading somewhere you should change out 1/3rd of your dsb every few years, because of the issues I am having... and the reason allot of ppl started using 5g buckets of sand for a remote sand bed. after a few years you dump one of the buckets and start over. and without light on the sandbed it makes it work even better.? but that was about 8-10 years ago.....
there are lots of ways to run a successful reef, and allot of the methods have been around for 20 years... I think the term "old school" is a blanket term! (I dont know what your talking about so I am oldschool) like this post shows everyone is oldschool because we all use methods that have been around for years but new versions of old products that have been adapted, adjusted and improved on...
when I think oldschool, I picture a stainless framed tank with a slate bottom and a hang on filter...
