Hey everyone, So I just upgraded my lighting, and have gotten a huge diatom bloom. Same stuff jasonandsarah helped me ID around week 3. A few questions: besides how horribly ugly it is, are there any other negatives to this being in my tank? What is the gas it releases when I smash it like the pest it is? And am I right for blaming the PVC piping I keep adding to the system as a possible source? My assumption is it's been here all along, my other lights just weren't giving it what it wanted

I'm battling either diatoms or dino, the same i think but slightly different. I'm gonna try the black out method i think before i do anything crazy.

What's the black out method? And if it doesn't work, what exactly are you going to do crazy? Just curious here

Lol complete lights out for 3-4 days. Have to cover the tank so no light gets in, but leave a little spot for oxygen exchange. Crazy would be blasting and sucking it off my sand daily, frequent water changes, probably gac. I'm a lazy reefer, so doing all that is extreme measures, ha!!!

Yeah the black out would be a little tough for me with all my coral and the 2 clown. Guess more water changes in my future

I use a old power head ziptied to a piece of PVC to blow it off the rocks, then let my filter sock catch it all, I don't have enough snail, I need to make a trip to the coast to get some more

The black out won't hurt anything in your tank. My tanks are both full of coral. It will survive the few days without light.
The controversy with water changes is wether it feeds the diatoms/dinos or not. I'll try to find the thread and share it.

I'll give the powerhead a shot too

How old is your tank with the diatoms? It's generally a common part of new tank cycle. And are you sure they are diatoms?

Yes that's definitely what it is. I just redid my entire plumbing on the tank, and I notice it's especially bad underwear the PVC enters the tank. So I'm really thinking that's the source.

I've never heard of PVC as a cause of diatoms. I would guess the change in light contributed to it. Look at your source water.

I would check your no3 and po4 to see if the algae isn't being caused by one of these. Check source water as well. No3 can be remedied with good skimming and very light feeding and water changes. po4 can be remedied with water changes, good skimming, light feeding and gfo.

I've done a 14 day blackout with no losses when fighting dinoflagellates... softy tank with a couple LPS. Pagoda cup didn't enjoy it, but it bounced back pretty quickly. I wouldn't recommend this with an SPS tank but many softies and LPS can tolerate more than you think.
